NEWBERG, Ore. — A recent exterior repainting of ARK Pet Rescue’s downtown Newberg building at 514 E 1st St. is bringing renewed attention to the local nonprofit—and highlighting the value of strategic partnerships in revitalizing commercial storefronts.

The project was coordinated by the Newberg Downtown Coalition as part of its ongoing efforts to support visual improvements across the city’s core business district. The nonprofit connected ARK Pet Rescue with JK Paint & Contracting LLC, a local company that volunteered its services to complete the work.

“The ARK Pet Rescue building—formerly the Newberg Music Store—is one of the shop fronts in the center of our downtown corridor,” Ebora said. “ARK Pet Rescue moved into this building recently and put in a lot of work inside to make a cute and friendly environment for their rescues and visitors. The outside of their shop did not reflect the cool work going on inside! It felt important to reach out and see how we as the Newberg Downtown Coalition could support Daria and her organization.”

That’s when Ebora said she thought of JK Paint, who had recently completed a fresh paint job on the building next door, where Minthorn Mercantile operates. They have a reputation for giving back to the community as well with projects like providing a fresh coat of paint for the Ixtapa mural and repainting the Newberg High School staff lounge.

Monica Strenke, head of marketing for JK Paint, said the company was glad to step in to this project as well.

“When we were asked to help paint the ARK Pet Rescue building, we knew we wanted to help if we could,” Strenke said. “We would not have been able to grow the way we have without the support of the Newberg community, which is why we love the opportunity to give back to Newberg. Plus, we are a family and office of animal lovers, so that connection made it feel even more important to us to take the opportunity to help out.”

Strenke said a fresh coat of paint can significantly improve how a business is perceived.“First impressions truly do matter, and making that a positive impression as they are approaching your business can be so impactful,” she said. “It can be so beneficial for the exterior presentation to match the experience you will get from the business.”

ARK Pet Rescue Executive Director Daria Veenstra said the change has been well received even in the few days that have passed since the project wrapped.

“What was once a dark, almost hidden building has now become a bright, welcoming beacon of hope—people have definitely noticed,” Veenstra said. “We’ve had neighbors stop by just to say how much they love the transformation, and some have even shared that it feels more joyful and inviting now.”

The updated look also reflects ARK’s mission, Veenstra added.

“For the animals ARK serves, many of whom come from broken or neglected situations, this fresh start is a visible reminder that they are seen, valued, and deeply loved,” she said. “It mirrors the transformation we believe is possible in every life when given compassion, safety, and grace.”

Ebora said the project aligns with the Downtown Coalition’s broader goals. “We’re focused on small, visible improvements that make downtown feel more active, cared for, and welcoming,” she said. “This was a simple project with a big return.”

The Coalition plans to continue supporting similar efforts and is working with partners to identify more buildings that could benefit from visual upgrades.
