Design Committee

Purpose: helps nurture an inviting atmosphere, created through attractive window displays, parking areas, building improvements, street furniture, signs, sidewalks, street lights, and landscaping. Design activities also include instilling good maintenance practices in the commercial district, enhancing the physical appearance of the commercial district by rehabilitating historic buildings, encouraging appropriate new construction, developing sensitive design management systems, and long-term planning.

Design Committee Work Plan

  • Training and education on topics pertinent to the committee
  • Work with Economic Restructuring committee to do building inventory
  • Provide design education
  • Scrapbook of great design ideas
  • Individual visits with interested business owners to encourage design improvements
  • Workshops for storefront design and interior merchandise display
  • Create education system for signage and city codes
  • Plan streetscape improvements
  • Understand existing plans and codes
  • Develop long-term strategy for improvement
  • Assist with beautification of downtown
  • Hold “Clean-up Days”
  • 2nd Street parking lot/alley improvements
  • Place displays in unoccupied buildings
  • Distribute subsidized holiday lights and replacement bulbs
  • Develop strategy for flower baskets/planters/street lamps/trees
  • Work with Economic Restructuring Committee to identify financial assistance and incentives for facade improvements
  • Spec book of ideas and prices for signage/façade improvements
  • Organize walkabouts to identify assets and issues
  • Historic site identification and signage for self-guided walking tour
  • Identify and solicit commitments to rehabilitate buildings
  • Promote restructuring of traffic flow
